Andek-Ajei Road Reopened as Lord Mayor Leads Emergency Clearance of Landslide Debris
Andek, 17th May 2026 – Traffic and movement along the Andek-Ajei road have resumed after the Lord Mayor of Andek Council, Mr. Ubangoh Helly, led an emergency operation to clear rocks and earth blocking the route following multiple landslides and mudflows.
The road, a vital link for residents and traders between Andek and Ajei, was severely damaged last week when heavy rains triggered a massive mudflow that destroyed about 500 meters of the stretch. Additional landslides at Bonatu and Ajei further cut off access, leaving communities stranded and disrupting the transport of goods and people.
During a General Assembly meeting with the people of Bonatu, the Lord Mayor had promised swift action to remove the debris. True to his word, he returned to the site today, Sunday 17th May 2026, with a bulldozer and technical team to clear the obstruction.
He was accompanied by the Member of Parliament for Momo West Constituency, Barrister AWUTAH Philip, who joined the exercise in solidarity with the affected population and was received at the site by His Highness the Fon of Bonatu village.
Speaking at the site, the Lord Mayor reaffirmed the Council’s commitment to responding quickly to emergencies that affect livelihoods and mobility. “Our people cannot be cut off from their farms, markets, and families. We promised to act, and today we are acting,” he said.
The MP for Momo West praised the intervention, noting that timely action prevents further isolation of rural communities. He urged residents to support local authorities in maintaining cleared routes and reporting new hazards early.
Residents of Bonatu welcomed the development, referring to the Lord Mayor by his new nickname “talk n’a do”, given by Section President Honorable Ujambeng Stephen, in recognition of his hands-on approach to community problems.
The Council has advised road users to exercise caution as the soil remains unstable in some sections due to ongoing rains. Further preventive measures are being considered to reduce future landslide risks along the corridor.
