ANDEK COUNCIL UPLAND RICE REVOLUTION: ANDEK DETERMINED TO EMERGE AS ONE OF THE LEADING UPLAND RICE PRODUCERS IN THE NORTH WEST REGION
The Lord Mayor of Andek Council, Mr. UBANGOH HELLY MANYELLE Akoba, is pleased to inform the population, stakeholders, development partners and the general public that Andek Council has resolutely engaged in the cultivation of Upland Rice, with the determination to immerge as one of the major upland rice production basins in the North West Region.
This bold initiative is inspired by Mr. Basilius Tatah, President of CAWDEV, whose vision, technical guidance and passion for food self-sufficiency have ignited a new agricultural consciousness in our Municipality. The Council expresses its profound gratitude to Mr. Tatah and CAWDEV for this inspiring partnership.
THE PICTURES TELL THE STORY
As evidenced by the attached images taken from our experimental and expansion fields in Andek, the upland rice is flourishing luxuriantly – green, healthy and promising. Grown on our fertile highland soils without swamps, this rice demonstrates that Andek has the agro-ecological potential to produce rice at large scale.
WHY UPLAND RICE FOR ANDEK?
In line with the Head of State’s PIISAH (Integrated Import-Substitution Plan 2027-2029) and the 2027 Budget Circular on socio-economic impact:
1. To fight hunger and ensure food security – Rice is the most consumed cereal in Cameroon, yet we import over 80%.
2. To create wealth and jobs – Upland rice requires less water, is less capital-intensive, and is ideal for our youths and women.
3. To reduce importation – Producing what we eat and eating what we produce.
OUR DETERMINATION
Andek Council shall:
– Expand from experimental plots to large-scale cultivation across all 32 Communities of Andek;
– Organize farmers into Upland Rice Cooperatives for training, inputs and mechanization;
– Establish a Rice Milling and Storage Unit in partnership with CAWDEV, MINADER, MIDENO and other partners;
– Link production to markets in Bamenda, Douala and beyond.
The Council hereby calls on all Andek sons and daughters, traditional authorities, farmer groups, and development partners to join this Rice Revolution.
Andek has done it with Ngie Beans. Andek will do it with Upland Rice.
Done in Andek, this 12th October 2026
